Space Block Tainan

A project for a series of three Housing Complexes in Tainan city, Taiwan R.O.C.. Our team, Kazuhiro Kojima + Kazuko Akamatsu / CAt (C+A Tokyo, reorganized from Coelacanth and Associates since 2005) are acting as the design architects of the three projects, in collaboration with local architects, Yuan L. Tsai / EDS International, Inc.. In the hot and humid weather of Tainan, we’re trying to generate a comfortable space not by controlling the outside weather with hi-end technology, but by upgrading quality of the space itself. We have already realized one project under a similar situation at “Space Block Hanoi Model,” however the construction code of the city is much more strict here. In this project, add to the existing two kinds of “Space Blocks (SB),” one is “porous part” or the exterior SB and the other is “mass part” or the interior SB, a new type of SB will be installed. Which will be called “Reversible Block,” which can be both interior / exterior, by opening and closing the glass louvers surrounding it. By adopting “Reversible Blocks” whole architecture will start breathing, so as to adjust more flexible to the climate.
