This semi-cooperative housing project is located in a quiet residential
area in central Tokyo. Although it looks like one project, because the sites
are touching each other, it actually consists of two very different sibling
projects. 'Apartments' has six residential units and 'Blocks' has 8 flats.
Many detached row houses are lined up in this residential area; therefore
buildings with eight or six units would have been too bulky. So instead of
inserting such volumes into the city, we suggested to split them into four
grains, each rotated in a slightly different angle. As a result, each resident
has windows in four directions. The design of this project began with a
common skeleton and enclosure, but resulted in 14 different residences;
each unit is a result of the collaborative design process with their
respective owner.
