Symbolic, Structural, and Environmental Facades - A New Form of Seismic Retrofit

Retrofit of a 50+ year old 4-story tenant building in downtown Nagoya. This is a seismic retrofit in which asymmetric oval-shaped seismic elements were inserted into the existing RC facade to ensure a column-and-beam frame and horizontal forces by RC construction. This is not only a mere structural renewal, but also an attempt of a new seismic retrofit that brings various meanings and functions to the building.
The asymmetric oval-shaped seismic element becomes a symbol (icon) of the building, a feature of the building that is not buried in the chaotic downtown streetscape, and contributes to the vitality of the city. Structurally, the building will be reinforced with seismic reinforcement while securing the opening area through the rational configuration of the asymmetrical oval-shaped icon that encompasses the new column-beam frame and the triangular frame. Environmentally, the facade was renovated with balconies to prevent infection through natural ventilation that is unaffected by weather conditions, and to contribute to the liveliness of the streetscape through the semi-outdoor space on each floor, along with the icons.
The aging common-area finishes, equipment piping, and openings were updated, and the tenant interiors were made rough, utilizing the existing building frame as much as possible. While leaving room for the tenants to customize the space, the facility piping routes were consolidated or left bare to create a clear facility plan that can easily respond to the maintenance, renewal, and facility requirements of various types of businesses.
