This four-story steel-frame residence in Nagoya is home to a family of five. Situated near a bustling shopping district, it is surrounded by a diverse urban fabric comprising low-rise houses, mid- to high-rise apartment buildings, and office structures.
To ensure privacy while maximizing natural light and ventilation, a void resembling a well was created at the southeast corner. Enclosed by double-layered walls and extending to the full height of the building, this two-story void acts as a spatial courtyard. It enables each floor to function as both an indoor living space and an outdoor flat garden, while also serving as a vertical connector that fosters visual and spatial continuity among family members across floors.
The first floor accommodates parking for two cars and a storage room. The second floor houses two private rooms and wet areas, while the third floor contains an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area (LDK). The fourth floor includes two additional private rooms.
Each level is carefully designed with ample storage and an efficient layout that integrates the central void.
To maintain privacy from the street, perforated metal screens are installed over the road-facing openings. These allow windows to remain open without compromising privacy. The design of the enclosed three-dimensional courtyard strikes a balance between openness and seclusion, creating a rich spatial experience and a comfortable living environment—an effective solution for mid-rise urban housing.
