House YK / Islands

2005Complete

CAtKazuko Akamatsu

This is a house for a family of four built in Chiba City,in a slender alley 4m wide and 40m deep. The thin wooden walls, 62mm thick and made of 2×4 inserted between structural plywood on both sides, were assembled by layering them and gradually opening the cracks. These cracks draw the light into the rooms, and it has a different expression depending on time, season, and weather, and as slits that guide sightlines from within the rooms to the exterior, they give rise to changes in the spaces. Inside are aligned several "Islands" that function as triggers for people to linger. Because the "Islands" and activities of people begin to flow. By means of stairs located in two places along this length, it is possible to wander around on the floor, suspended above the "islands", the bridge , and the terrace.
