HABU Community Learning Center

2021Complete

CAtKazuko AkamatsuShinya Omura

The project of relocating the dilapidated community center to the site of the former Habu Elementary School, which closed in 2015 and continues to use only the gymnasium and grounds as community facilities. The site is located near the coast of Innoshima, and private houses are lined up on the sloping land with the mountains at the back.

The volume and roof of the community center were designed to be on a scale similar to that of a private house, and planned to blend in with the surrounding environment. The boundaries between rooms and corridors are sometimes clearly separated, sometimes loosely connected, and change in size as needed, becoming one with the terrace and expanding into the external space. A series of subdivided rooms, corridors, terraces, and plazas allows for use in a variety of situations. Using materials sampled from the cityscape, it blends into the local scenery.

The hall comes in three sizes, large, medium, and small, and can be used in a variety of ways by opening and closing the fittings that serve as boundaries. The warm wooden roof welcomes people, and by setting up a porch under the roof, it becomes a place for visitors to interact.
